The Do’s & Don’t of showreel editing

Here’s my FAIRLY COMPREHENSIVE LIST!

Do's:

  1. Do Keep It Short and Engaging:

    • Aim for a duration of 2-3 minutes. Highlight only the best moments to keep that attention!

  2. Do Start with a Strong Opening:

    • Capture interest in the first 10 seconds with your most impactful scene to ensure viewers keep watching.

  3. Do Show Your Range:

    • Include a variety of scenes that demonstrate your versatility as an actor, covering different emotions and character types.

  4. Do Use High-Quality Footage:

    • Ensure all clips are in high resolution and have clear audio. Poor quality footage can distract from your performance. 4:3 aspect ratio really ages a clip, so either zoom in or leave it out altogether

  5. Do Tailor It to Your Audience:

    • Customize your showreel for the type of roles you are targeting. Different genres may require different focuses.

  6. Do Keep It Professional:

    • Use clean cuts and smooth transitions. A polished look makes a positive impression.

  7. Do Include Contact Information:

    • End your showreel with your name and contact details, making it easy for casting directors to reach you.

  8. Do Seek Feedback:

    • Before finalizing, get opinions from industry professionals or trusted peers to ensure your showreel is effective.

  9. Do Regularly Update Your Showreel:

    • Keep your showreel current by adding new work and removing outdated material as your career progresses.

Don'ts:

  1. Don't Overload with Too Many Clips:

    • Quality over quantity. Too many scenes can overwhelm the viewer and dilute the impact of your best performances.

  2. Don't Include Irrelevant Content:

    • Avoid scenes that do not showcase your acting skills, such as crowd scenes or clips where you have minimal dialogue.

  3. Don't Use Montage Clips:

    • Avoid using montages set to music as they can feel less personal and fail to demonstrate your acting abilities clearly.

  4. Don't Ignore Scene Context:

    • Provide enough context for each scene to make sense without including unnecessary backstory or exposition.

  5. Don't Use Distracting Effects:

    • Steer clear of excessive visual effects, flashy transitions, or fancy graphics that can distract from your performance.

  6. Don't Include Personal Information:

    • Avoid adding personal information such as your home address. Only include professional contact details.

  7. Don't Forget to Showcase Personality:

    • While keeping it professional, ensure your showreel reflects your unique personality and acting style.
